Smash Bros. Ultimate Ruleset

Rules below do not change between Singles and Doubles formats. When applicable and possible, rules are reflected in the online environment as well (and replaced with client-appropriate alternatives if necessary). STEVE IS ALLOWED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

  • Tournament Rules
    • Set Length. All tournament sets are best of 3 games until top cut (Top 8 here), at which point sets are best of 5.
    • Set Procedure. Players select characters (either may elect Double Blind). Starter Stage Striking determines the first stage. Winner of preceding game bans 2 stages; loser picks the next stage adhering to Stage Clause. Winner then announces character, loser announces character. Repeat for all subsequent games.
    • Stage Agreement. Players may select any legal stage if both agree. Players may not play on non-legal stages or change set length/terms. Violation = DQ for both.
    • Double Blind Character Selection. Either player may request a double blind. A referee will be told each player's first-round character in secret, then both select with the referee validating.
    • Stage Striking. Best-of-1 RPS; winner chooses to strike first or second. Stages struck P1-P2-P2-P1.
    • Pausing. Pause must be set to OFF. If left on, pausing is only legal while either player remains on their own respawn platform and only to summon a TO or for controller malfunction. All other pauses = stock loss for the pauser. If the pause causes the opponent to lose a stock, the pausing player receives a game loss.
    • Stalling. Stalling (intentionally making the game unplayable) is banned. Includes becoming invisible, infinites past 300%, and unreachable positions. Stalling = forfeit of the game.
    • Self-Destruct Moves. Results screen determines the winner. Sudden Death triggers a standard play-off.
    • Sudden Death. Determined by stocks and percentage at game end. Tied = lower percentage wins. Tied percentage or simultaneous last-stock loss = 1-stock tiebreaker, 3-minute time limit. In-game 300% Sudden Death does NOT count.
    • Tardiness. Not present for your set 15 minutes past scheduled start time = total DQ.
    • Collusion. Suspected collusion (intentionally throwing, splitting payout, bracket manipulation) = immediate DQ.
    • Coaching. Coaching during a set is not permitted. Penalties: 1st offense — verbal warning. 2nd — game loss. 3rd — full DQ. Cheering ("let's go!", "you got this!") is allowed; specific gameplay advice is not.
    • Force Majeure. Any game interrupted by external impartial conditions (power, safety, AV) is reset and replayed.
    • Final Rulings. Judgment of tournament staff is final.
  • Game Rules
    • Game Settings. 3 stocks, 7 minutes. Final Smash Meter: Off. Spirits: Off. Damage Handicap: Off. Stage Hazards: Off. Items: Off and None. Pausing: Off. % Damage: Yes. Stage Morph: Off. Echo Fighters: Separate. Mii Fighters: all moveset combinations legal.
    • Starter Stages. Battlefield, Town and City, Small Battlefield, Pokémon Stadium 2, Smashville.
    • Counterpick Stages. Hollow Bastion, Final Destination, Kalos Pokémon League. (Final Destination may be required to play on Wuhu Island Omega.)
    • Counterpick Stage Banning. After each game, the winner of the previous game bans two stages from the full list. Bans do not persist. The loser then chooses from remaining stages, barring the most recent stage they won on.
    • Controllers. GameCube controller recommended. Switch Pro Controller and Joy Cons permitted. Third-party controllers with turbo/macro options are banned.
    • Glitch Clause. If anything in-game results in unforeseen consequences (invisible characters, teleport bugs, etc.), play continues unless the game becomes unplayable. In that case inform tournament staff for resolution.
    • Mii Fighter Clause. Must use default costumes. Must use a Guest Mii. Declare Mii Fighters before the set; name them by combination ("XXXX"). Up to 3 Mii Fighters per set.
    • Patch. Events run on whatever patch is currently available.
